Escorca: villas and local guide to the Tramuntana
Explore Escorca with our area guide and villas, centred on Lluc, Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis, plus Cala Tuent, reservoirs and the Dry Stone Route.
Escorca spans high Tramuntana peaks and coast, with Lluc as its cultural stop for the sanctuary, museum and basics. Scenic roads lead to Sa Calobra, the Torrent de Pareis and Cala Tuent, with reservoirs and Dry Stone Route access.
Escorca
Escorca occupies a large, thinly populated stretch of Mallorca's Serra de Tramuntana cultural landscape. The official Balearic tourism authority places it among the island's highest mountains, including Puig Major, and describes its scattered population around Lluc. Lluc is the practical civic and cultural centre: its 13th-century sanctuary, basilica, museum, botanical garden, guesthouse, restaurants and shops make it a natural stopping point in a municipality whose settlements and services are widely dispersed.
The coast is defined by the route down to Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis, a Natural Monument where the gorge meets the sea. Cala Tuent is a separate, unserviced sandy-and-pebble cove at the foot of Puig Major. Inland, the Ma-10 connects the mountain landscape, with the Gorg Blau and Cúber reservoirs and access to the GR 221 Dry Stone Route. This is a mountain-and-coast base rather than a walkable resort: road conditions, weather, parking arrangements and the opening hours of remote venues merit checking before each outing.

Staying here
A villa stay in Escorca suits walkers, cyclists, landscape-focused families and groups who value a remote Tramuntana setting over resort convenience. Lluc is the service focus for the sanctuary, food, basic health care and visitor information, while Sa Calobra and Cala Tuent are day destinations reached on mountain roads. The GR 221 links this landscape to a wider network of restored historic paths, and the Ma-10 makes scenic road journeys possible between Pollença, Lluc and Sóller.
The trade-off is distance and terrain: supplies, medical provision and restaurants are concentrated in particular stops rather than a single town centre; Cala Tuent has no beach services; and the road to Sa Calobra is winding. A car is useful, but drivers should plan cautiously, check the Ajuntament's live Sa Calobra and Tuent parking information, and allow extra time in peak season.
Towns, villages and coast
- Lluc — The main inhabited and civic focus of the municipality, centred on the Santuari de Lluc at Plaça Pelegrins; it has the sanctuary, visitor information, restaurants, shops and the local basic health unit.
- Escorca village — The historic municipal name is associated with the high Serra de Tramuntana municipality, whose population is dispersed rather than concentrated in one conventional town centre.
- Sa Calobra and Port de Sa Calobra — A small coastal arrival point below the mountain road, with access to Sa Calobra, the Torrent de Pareis, seasonal visitor information and shoreline restaurants.
- Cala Tuent — A separate cove beneath Puig Major, reached by a steep final road and known for a sand-and-pebble shore, pine slopes and the lack of beach services.
- Gorg Blau and Cúber — High mountain reservoir landscapes on the Ma-10 corridor, used as quiet viewpoints and starting points for walks in the central Serra.
Highlights
The places we would not miss, from landmarks and beaches to walks and viewpoints.
- Santuari de Lluc (Landmark) — A 13th-century sanctuary in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, home to Our Lady of Lluc. The complex includes the Basilica, a museum, botanical garden, guesthouse, restaurants and shops.
- Torrent de Pareis and Sa Calobra (Nature) — Sa Calobra is the coastal gateway to the Torrent de Pareis Natural Monument, where the gorge reaches the sea between high cliffs. It can be reached by the winding mountain road, by boat from Port de Sóller, or on foot via the torrent subject to conditions and route planning.
- Cala Tuent (Beach) — A sandy-and-pebble cove between Punta de Sa Corda and Morro des Forat, at the foot of Puig Major, with pine forest, cliffs and a rocky Posidonia seabed. The official visitor page stresses that there are no beach services, so bring water and food.
- Puig Major (Nature) — The highest mountain in the Balearic Islands forms the mountain backdrop to Cala Tuent and the central Escorca landscape. The official visitor material lists it at 1,445 metres and notes that it is not publicly accessible.
- Gorg Blau and Cúber reservoirs (Nature) — Two central Serra reservoir landscapes: Gorg Blau sits between steep walls and is part of the Serra's hydraulic system, while Cúber lies at the foot of Puig Major and is a starting point for excursions.
- Ruta de Pedra en Sec GR 221 (Activity) — The Consell de Mallorca's Dry Stone Route follows restored ancient paths through the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana. Its published route information identifies Escorca places including Cala Tuent, Gorg Blau and the Son Amer stage.
- Sa Calobra road and Nus de sa Corbata (Viewpoint) — The route down to Sa Calobra is a steep, winding mountain road. Its loop, the Nus de sa Corbata, is an engineering landmark where the road crosses itself amid the karst landscape.
- Serra de Tramuntana Cultural Landscape (Nature) — Escorca lies in Mallorca's north-west mountain cultural landscape, inscribed by UNESCO in 2011 for terraces, dry-stone construction, farming estates and interconnected water-management works shaped over centuries.
