Ciutadella de Menorca: villas and area guide
Our guide to Ciutadella de Menorca and the villas there, from the old town and Port de Ciutadella to Cala Macarella, Camí de Cavalls and Naveta des Tudons.
A historic harbour city with a walled core, Ciutadella de Menorca pairs port promenades and dining with white-sand days at Cala Macarella, Cala en Turqueta and Son Saura, plus rural paths on the Camí de Cavalls.
Ciutadella de Menorca
Ciutadella de Menorca is the historic urban centre at Menorca’s western end and one of the island’s two main cities. Its former-capital character remains visible around Plaça des Born, the port, stately façades and lanes of the old quarter, where the fourteenth-century cathedral occupies the site of a former mosque. Beyond town, the municipality shifts to dry-stone farmland and coast: the south holds the fine-sand coves of Cala Macarella and Macarelleta, Cala en Turqueta and Son Saura, while the north-west opens to the exposed limestone landscape around Punta Nati.
This is a municipality of contrasts rather than a single resort: a serious historic town and working harbour, holiday developments at Cala’n Bosch and Cap d’Artrutx, quiet rural ground, Talayotic archaeology and the Camí de Cavalls coastal path. Cala Galdana is nearby but belongs to neighbouring Ferreries.

Staying here
Ciutadella works well for guests who want beach days balanced with a proper town for dining, shopping and an evening harbour walk. The historic core and port suit food-focused couples and groups; Cala’n Bosch offers a marina setting and a council-run summer market, while the southern rural area appeals to walkers using the Camí de Cavalls and to beach-minded families. Cala Macarella, Macarelleta, Cala en Turqueta and Son Saura are the defining south-coast choices; their protected, isolated character is part of the appeal, but Cala Macarella is recorded as having high occupancy, so early planning matters in the main summer season.
A car is the practical choice for spreading stays between town, the rural coast, beaches and sites such as the Naveta des Tudons. May, June and September are measured alternatives to the hotter July–August period in the local climate normals, while June to September also brings the town’s evening artisan markets. In winter, the town remains the more useful base, but these seasonal markets have ended and the coast is quieter in terms of organised activity. Golf is not in the municipality: the island’s sole course is in Son Parc, Es Mercadal.
Towns, villages and coast
- Ciutadella old town and Port de Ciutadella — The historic core runs from Plaça des Born down towards the fishing and leisure port, with the cathedral, former palaces, narrow lanes and harbour-front dining defining the town experience.
- Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta — These adjacent south-coast coves lie within the municipality; Cala Macarella is an isolated white-sand beach sheltered by cliffs, while both are on the Camí de Cavalls coastal section.
- Cala en Turqueta — A south-coast cove within Ciutadella, on the Camí de Cavalls route linking the remote beaches from Macarella towards Son Saura.
- Son Saura — A southern coastal area within municipal bounds, included with the remote coves on the Consell’s Ciutadella S-4 Camí de Cavalls route.
- Cala’n Bosch and Cap d’Artrutx — The south-west resort and marina area has a daily council summer market at Cala en Bosc; the S-4 route reaches Cap d’Artrutx before continuing towards Ciutadella.
Highlights
The places we would not miss, from landmarks and beaches to walks and viewpoints.

- Cathedral of Menorca (Landmark) — In the old town, this Catalan Gothic cathedral was built in the fourteenth century over the former Muslim mosque by order of Alfonso III of Aragon.
- Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta (Beach) — These south-coast coves are within Ciutadella; Cala Macarella has white sand, calm waters, cliffs, parking and restaurants, and is listed as isolated with high occupancy.
- Cala en Turqueta (Beach) — Cala en Turqueta is one of the remote south-coast beaches encountered on the Ciutadella S-4 route, which follows the Camí de Cavalls between Macarella and Cap d’Artrutx.

- Camí de Cavalls, Ciutadella south-coast section (Activity) — The Consell’s S-4 circuit follows the GR-223 along the southern coast and links Macarella, Macarelleta, Cala en Turqueta, Es Talaier and Son Saura before Cap d’Artrutx.
