Sóller: villas and local guide

Our Sóller guide and villas: citrus valley life, Plaça de la Constitució, the tram and Port de Sóller, plus walks from Biniaraix and the harbour beach.

Stay in Sóller for citrus groves, Modernist town life, mountain walking and a sheltered harbour on Mallorca’s northwest coast. Historic rail and tram link town and Port de Sóller.

Sóller

Sóller is a municipality on Mallorca’s north-west coast, in a cultivated valley beneath the Serra de Tramuntana. Its landscape joins citrus orchards, olive groves, stone-built settlements and a narrow opening to the Mediterranean at Port de Sóller. The main town retains an ensemble around Plaça de la Constitució: the Church of Sant Bartomeu, the Bank of Sóller and the railway station, while Modernist buildings recall commercial links with France and the Americas.

The historic railway and tram still connect town and harbour. Port de Sóller remains the municipality’s seafaring quarter, with a sheltered bay, promenade and beach. Inland, Biniaraix provides the traditional starting point for the old dry-stone route through the Barranc de Biniaraix, and l’Horta is the residential and orchard district identified by the Ajuntament as one of the municipality’s population centres. The valley’s character is active rather than resort-led, shaped by walking, small-scale farming, local shops and the sea.

Staying here

A private stay in Sóller suits travellers who want the Tramuntana landscape without giving up town services or access to the coast. Families often favour Port de Sóller for the beach, promenade and practical shopping, while couples and food-minded travellers can base themselves near the town centre for the square, market and dining. Biniaraix is the natural choice for walkers using the Barranc de Biniaraix; l’Horta and the outer valley suit groups seeking an orchard-and-mountain setting.

Golfers can plan a round at Golf Son Termes in Bunyola. Spring and autumn are compelling for walking and market life, although the municipal climate guide notes that regular rainfall is concentrated in those seasons; summers and winters are generally mild. A car is useful for rural addresses and flexible exploration, but the historic tram links town and port and bus services connect the valley with Palma.

Be prepared for regulated parking and the low-emission zone in the town centre. The trade-off for the harbour beach is a municipality whose remaining coast is largely steep and rocky, rather than a succession of sandy coves.

Towns, villages and coast

  • Sóller — The municipal town is the valley’s commercial and cultural centre, organised around Plaça de la Constitució, Sant Bartomeu, the Bank of Sóller and the historic railway station.

  • Biniaraix — This small hamlet at the foot of the Tramuntana retains cobbled lanes and begins the historic dry-stone route into the Barranc de Biniaraix.
  • l’Horta — l’Horta, not s’Horta, is an official population centre of Sóller municipality, forming part of the cultivated valley around the main town.
