Palma: villas and locality guide
Palma villas guide to the Old Town, Santa Catalina and Portixol, with Son Vida golf, Bellver Castle, the Cathedral, Almudaina and the coastal path.
Palma gathers a historic city and bay on Mallorca’s south coast, from the Cathedral and Almudaina to markets, museums and marinas, with Santa Catalina, Portixol’s seafront, Son Vida golf and access towards the Tramuntana.
Palma
Palma is Mallorca’s capital and a municipality on the south coast, arranged around the Bay of Palma. Its historic core joins a working city of markets, museums, restaurants and a waterfront framed by the Cathedral and the Royal Palace of La Almudaina. Beyond the centre, Santa Catalina brings a dense café-and-market quarter, while Portixol and El Molinar follow the shore.
On the western hills are Gènova and Son Vida; Establiments sits on the northern, more rural edge. This mix makes Palma less a single resort town than a wide municipality that moves from old streets and marinas to residential hillsides and access towards the Serra de Tramuntana. City beaches, coastal paths and cultural institutions make it workable for a short cultural stay as well as a longer base.

Staying here
A private base in Palma suits travellers who want city dining, museums and the sea without giving up residential space. Palma Old Town and Santa Catalina suit food-led stays and couples who prefer to walk to evening life; Portixol offers a seafront setting and the coastal path. Families can combine city facilities with Cala Major’s sandy beach, while Son Vida is the natural choice for golfers.
Establiments and Gènova appeal to groups and walkers seeking the quieter, hillier side of the municipality and access towards the Serra de Tramuntana. April to June and September to October are the most balanced periods for outdoor days: AEMET’s Palma normals show average daily maxima of 19.8°C in April, 28.1°C in June, 27.9°C in September and 23.9°C in October; July and August average above 31°C. A car is useful for the hills, golf and excursions, but less necessary in the central districts, where buses serve the city, major attractions and beaches and the centre is practical on foot. Expect a more urban rhythm than in a village, with busy event dates, limited old-town driving convenience and quieter winter evenings outside the centre.
Towns, villages and coast
- Palma Old Town — The historic centre gathers the Cathedral, Royal Palace of La Almudaina, civic squares, museums and a dense concentration of restaurants. It suits guests who want to explore mainly on foot.
- Santa Catalina — A west-of-centre Palma neighbourhood known for its market, cafés and restaurants. It is a practical choice for dining and a more local, city-based stay.
- Portixol and El Molinar — These former seafront quarters lie on Palma’s east-facing shoreline. The signed coastal path runs from Es Portixol through El Molinar towards Cala Estància.
- Son Vida — A hilly western Palma area associated with the Arabella golf courses. Golf Son Vida overlooks the Bay of Palma and is part of the municipality’s principal golf cluster.
- Establiments — A northern Palma area in the municipality’s Nord statistical zone. Its lower-density, country-edge character suits guests prioritising a base between the city and the Tramuntana side of Mallorca.
- Gènova — Gènova is a western Palma neighbourhood in the municipal Ponent statistical zone. Its elevated position and west-side setting distinguish it from the central waterfront districts.
