Plan a Mallorca, Ibiza or Menorca villa stay with monthly airport climate normals, Balearic Sea temperatures, Aena passenger data and published seasonal villa-rate medians.
When is the best time to visit the Balearic Islands?
For warm sea swimming with a less intense airport-travel period than July and August, May, June and September are the most balanced choices. May has average airport temperatures of 17.5°C in Palma, 18.6°C in Ibiza and 17.8°C in Menorca; September has the warmest sea baseline after August. July and August are the driest, hottest months and had the largest Aena passenger totals in the January–August 2026 reporting period. October can suit an active stay, but it is not a dry-season substitute: the airport rainfall normals rise to 58–78 mm. The table below pairs long-term weather and sea baselines with published Azul Stays monthly rate data for planning a 2027 villa stay.
Month-by-month weather, sea temperature and villa rates
This table is the practical planning reference for Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca. Weather figures are AEMET 1981–2010 normals: each entry is mean air temperature and mean rainfall, in the order Palma / Ibiza / Menorca. Sea figures are the regional Balearic Islands monthly sea-surface-temperature climatology from SOCIB and Copernicus Marine Service for 1982–2015, so they are a regional baseline rather than a reading at a particular beach.
| Month | Weather: mean air / rain | Sea: regional SST baseline | Villa rates: published nightly median |

The January–October prices are mid-month 2027 medians across properties with a published rate. November and December are 2026 mid-month values because those are the published dates in the inventory snapshot. Menorca has one listed property, so its figure is that property’s published rate, not a multi-villa median. A price is not an availability forecast: use the published seasonal nightly rates for the dates and villa you are considering.
January to March: mild air, cold sea and winter-rate dates
January to March are for land-based island time rather than a conventional beach holiday. The regional sea baseline remains around 14°C to 14.5°C, while airport mean air temperatures range from 9.5°C in Palma in January to 13.7°C in Ibiza in March. Menorca is the wettest of the three airport normals in both January and February, at 52 mm and 54 mm respectively.
The useful distinction is between a daytime visit and a sea holiday. AEMET’s monthly mean temperature is an average across day and night, not an afternoon maximum, and rainfall is a long-term monthly mean rather than a forecast. Pack layers and make any outdoor plan flexible. For an island base in this period, the published mid-month villa medians in the table are at their lowest for Mallorca and Menorca; Ibiza’s snapshot median is unchanged from January through May.
A quiet-season stay works particularly well when the villa itself is central to the plan. In Mallorca, Casa Limones in Pollença sleeps eight in four bedrooms, lists air conditioning, a heated pool and sauna, and has a seven-night minimum stay. In Ibiza, Villa Romero in Es Cubells sleeps 12 in six bedrooms, lists daily housekeeping and has a seven-night minimum stay. These are property facts, not a statement about winter availability; check the selected dates on the individual page. Mallorca villas and Ibiza villas show the current date-specific choice.
April to June: the clearest shoulder-season decision
April to June moves from cool-water spring into reliable warm-air conditions, with May and June offering the most straightforward compromise between climate and published seasonal rates. Airport mean temperatures rise in May to 17.5°C in Palma, 18.6°C in Ibiza and 17.8°C in Menorca. By June they reach 21.7°C, 22.6°C and 21.8°C, while the rainfall normals fall to 12 mm, 11 mm and 14 mm.
April is still a cooler-water month: the regional sea baseline is about 15.2°C. May reaches about 17.8°C, which some swimmers will find refreshing rather than warm. June reaches about 21.5°C and is the first month in this climatology that gives a clearly warmer-sea proposition. That difference matters more for children and guests planning long days in the water than the air temperature alone.
Aena’s 2026 airport reports show the travel curve building before summer. In May, Palma recorded 4,009,687 passengers, Ibiza 1,175,039 and Menorca 474,351; in June, the respective figures were 4,297,092, 1,300,187 and 623,099. Those counts cover passengers embarking or disembarking, so they measure airport flow, not the number of people at a particular cove. They are still useful evidence that May is materially less airport-intensive than July and August.
For Menorca, factor in Ciutadella’s fixed Sant Joan festival. The main festivities centre on 23 and 24 June, with activity beginning on the preceding Sunday. Choose those dates if the festival is part of the trip; do not choose them in expectation of a quiet Ciutadella stay. Finca Santa Ana in Ciutadella de Menorca sleeps 12 in six bedrooms, lists daily housekeeping and a private gym, and has a one-night minimum stay. Its published rate is €4,200 per night for the June 2027 mid-month date in the source snapshot.
July to September: warm water and the heaviest travel period
July and August are the hot, dry core of the season; September keeps warm sea conditions but brings a higher rainfall normal. In July, AEMET mean airport temperatures are 24.8°C in Palma, 25.6°C in Ibiza and 24.9°C in Menorca, with just 3–5 mm of mean rainfall. August is marginally warmer at all three stations and the regional sea baseline reaches about 25.9°C.
The airport data makes the summer concentration concrete. Aena recorded 4,696,690 passengers at Palma, 1,490,302 at Ibiza and 745,435 at Menorca in July 2026. August was higher again: 4,808,295, 1,519,201 and 765,701. By comparison, the January totals were 1,275,134, 199,053 and 125,063. These are airport passenger counts, not evidence that every resort or beach has the same pattern, but they support treating July and August as the period requiring the most careful date and transport planning.
Published medians rise alongside that demand pattern. Mallorca’s July and August 2027 median is €4,064 per night, compared with €3,270 in May. Ibiza’s published median is €4,465 from June through September, while Menorca’s single listed villa moves from €4,200 in June to €5,400 in July and August. Rate ranges are wide because properties differ greatly; a median is a planning signal, not a quote.
September is an honest alternative for guests whose priority is warm water. The regional baseline is still about 24.7°C, but the rainfall normals rise to 50 mm in Palma, 57 mm in Ibiza and 61 mm in Menorca. It is not a dry-season replica of August. Punta Paraiso in Es Cubells sleeps 14 in six bedrooms, has a three-night minimum stay and lists air conditioning and panoramic ocean views. Its published nightly range is €1,450–€4,465.
October to December: warm-water autumn first, then a wetter winter
October is the more credible autumn shoulder month for sea time; November and December are better planned around the villa and daytime exploration. The regional sea baseline is about 22.0°C in October, then about 19.0°C in November and 16.1°C in December. Airport mean air temperatures in October remain 18.5°C in Palma, 20.2°C in Ibiza and 19.4°C in Menorca.
The trade-off is rain. October is the wettest month in the Palma normal at 62 mm and is close to Ibiza’s 58 mm. Menorca’s October normal is 78 mm, then its highest monthly value is 88 mm in November. This does not mean it rains continuously, but it does mean a September-style beach plan should have an indoor or flexible alternative.
On published rates, Mallorca’s median falls from €3,571 in September to €3,346 in October and €2,806 in November. Ibiza’s table value returns to €3,478 in October, while Finca Santa Ana’s listed Menorca rate is €4,200 in October and €3,300 in November and December. Check the dates rather than assuming every villa opens across every season. A coastal view may still be valuable, but sea temperature and rainfall figures should guide the expectation.
Which shoulder month should you choose?
Choose May for spring air temperatures and lower measured airport flow than July and August; choose June for warmer water and low rainfall normals; choose September for the warmest post-August sea baseline; choose October only if variable weather is acceptable. There is no single month that is lower-priced, dry, warm in the sea and quiet at once.
May is the careful all-round choice for guests who value daytime outdoor plans more than warm-water swimming. Its AEMET air means are already close to 18°C across the three stations, but the sea baseline is only about 17.8°C. June costs more in the published Mallorca and Ibiza medians, yet offers a 21.5°C sea baseline and much lower rainfall normals. For Menorca, avoid accidentally booking around Sant Joan if a calm Ciutadella stay is the aim.
September offers the clearest sea-led case, but its rainfall normals are markedly higher than July and August. October has a lower published Mallorca median than September and a still-mild regional sea baseline, but its rainfall data is the reason to book it for a flexible itinerary, not as a certainty. The 2026 Aena data runs to August at the time of writing, so it cannot be used to state a measured September or October crowd level for 2027.
For villa selection, check a property’s minimum stay as well as its seasonal price. Punta Paraiso has a three-night minimum; Casa Limones has a seven-night minimum; Finca Santa Ana has a one-night minimum. If arrival and departure routing is part of the choice, use the airport-to-villa drive-time guide alongside the island and date decision.
How to turn the calendar into a 2027 villa booking
Start with the month’s real constraint—sea warmth, school-holiday timing, a festival date or tolerance for rain—then compare individual published rates. The rate table is a portfolio-level snapshot: it does not replace the exact price and live availability shown after dates are selected. It also does not make a weather forecast. Climate normals describe a long period, while individual weeks can depart from them.
For a July or August plan, decide the dates and island first, then shortlist properties by bedroom count, location and minimum stay. For May, June, September and October, use the weather trade-offs above rather than assuming that the label “shoulder season” automatically means warm sea, low rain and low cost. The evidence shows different advantages in each month.
Azul Stays offers private villas and fincas in Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca, booked direct. Individual villa pages show published seasonal nightly rates and live availability; selecting dates gives the precise stay price. A 25% deposit places a provisional hold, subject to written booking confirmation. Use the villa collection to compare dates, or contact the villa team with the month, island, group size and non-negotiable requirements.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best month for warm sea swimming in the Balearic Islands?
August has the highest regional Balearic Sea monthly baseline in the SOCIB 1982–2015 climatology, at about 25.9°C. September follows at about 24.7°C, while July is about 24.6°C. Actual water temperature varies by coast, weather and year, so these figures are a planning baseline rather than a beach-specific forecast.
- Is May warm enough for a Mallorca, Ibiza or Menorca villa holiday?
May is warm enough for a spring-focused Mallorca, Ibiza or Menorca villa holiday, with AEMET mean airport temperatures of 17.5°C, 18.6°C and 17.8°C respectively. The regional sea-temperature baseline is about 17.8°C, so guests who prioritise long sea swims may prefer June or September.
- Which Balearic month has the lowest rainfall normal?
July has the lowest AEMET monthly rainfall normal at all three airport stations: 5 mm in Palma, 5 mm in Ibiza and 3 mm in Menorca. June is also dry in the normals, at 12 mm, 11 mm and 14 mm. A climate normal is not a promise about rain during a specific week.
- When is Sant Joan in Ciutadella, Menorca?
Ciutadella’s Sant Joan festivities have their main days on 23 and 24 June, with celebrations beginning on the preceding Sunday. The Consell Insular de Menorca and the Balearic tourism authority describe horse-led events and the Jocs des Pla among the programme. Guests seeking a quiet Ciutadella stay should avoid those festival dates.
- Are July and August the busiest months for Balearic airport travel?
Aena’s January–August 2026 reports show the highest reported monthly passenger totals in July and August for Palma, Ibiza and Menorca airports. August recorded 4,808,295 passengers in Palma, 1,519,201 in Ibiza and 765,701 in Menorca. Airport traffic is a useful travel-pressure indicator, but it does not measure crowd levels at every beach or town.
- How do Azul Stays villa rates change by season?
Published mid-month 2027 portfolio medians rise from €2,775 in Mallorca in January to €4,064 in July and August. Ibiza’s published median is €3,478 from January through May and €4,465 from June through September. Menorca has one listed villa, whose published rate moves from €3,300 in January to €5,400 in July and August.
