From the legendary fairways of Son Vida overlooking Palma to the clifftop holes of Alcanada with views to the lighthouse — a comprehensive guide to combining world-class golf with a luxury villa holiday in Mallorca.
Mallorca: The Mediterranean's Premier Golf Destination
Mallorca has quietly established itself as one of Europe's finest golf destinations — a claim supported by over twenty courses that range from championship layouts designed by golfing legends to charming nine-hole courses set among almond groves and olive trees. The island's appeal to golfers is multifaceted: a climate that permits year-round play, courses maintained to exceptional standards, dramatic landscapes that make every round visually memorable, and a supporting infrastructure of luxury villas, fine restaurants, and cultural attractions that elevates a golf trip into a complete holiday experience.
What distinguishes Mallorca from other Mediterranean golf destinations — the Algarve, the Costa del Sol, Turkey's Belek — is the quality of the non-golfing experience. This is not a destination where golf courses exist in isolation, surrounded by purpose-built resort developments. Mallorca's courses are woven into the island's landscape and culture, meaning that the drive to the first tee takes you through medieval villages, past mountain panoramas, and along coastlines of extraordinary beauty. The nineteenth hole might be a terrace overlooking Palma Bay, a table at a Michelin-starred restaurant, or a sunset swim in your villa's infinity pool.
Through Azul Stays, we create golf holidays that balance serious play with the broader pleasures of Balearic living. Our team can request tee times, organise transport and coordinate post-round dining on your behalf — all subject to each club’s and partner’s availability and confirmed for your booking.
An Overview of Mallorca's Golfing Landscape
Mallorca's twenty-plus golf courses offer remarkable variety, and understanding the landscape helps in planning an optimal itinerary.
The Palma Corridor — the area stretching from Son Vida in the hills above Palma to Santa Ponsa on the southwest coast — contains the island's highest concentration of quality courses. This is where you will find the Arabella Golf complex (Son Vida, Son Muntaner, Son Quint), Golf Santa Ponsa, and Bendinat, all within thirty minutes of central Palma. For guests staying in villas in the Palma, Calvià, or Bendinat areas, this corridor provides access to five or six excellent courses without ever driving more than twenty minutes.
The Northeast is home to Alcanada, widely considered Mallorca's finest course, as well as Capdepera and Canyamel. These courses benefit from the dramatic landscape of the island's northeastern corner — rocky coastlines, pine forests, and views across to Menorca on clear days. The area is slightly more remote, making it ideal for guests who prioritise golfing quality over proximity to Palma's restaurants and nightlife.
The Central and Southeast offer courses including Pula Golf, Son Antem, and Golf Maioris. These tend to be slightly less prestigious than the Palma corridor courses but offer excellent value and are often less crowded, making them good options for practice rounds or more relaxed play.
The Course Condition across Mallorca is generally excellent, reflecting the island's investment in its golfing infrastructure. The Mediterranean climate — mild winters, warm springs and autumns, and hot but manageable summers — means that courses are playable year-round, though the optimal months for golf are March to June and September to November, when temperatures are comfortable and the courses are in peak condition.
Golf Son Vida: The Grand Dame of Mallorcan Golf
Golf Son Vida holds a special place in Mallorca's golfing history. Opened in 1964, it was the island's first championship course and has hosted numerous professional tournaments, including the European Tour. Set in the exclusive Son Vida residential area above Palma, the course offers what many consider the finest views of any golf course in the Mediterranean — panoramic vistas across Palma Bay, the cathedral, and the Serra de Tramuntana mountains that serve as a constant, magnificent backdrop.
The Course is a par 71 measuring 5,781 metres from the championship tees, designed to challenge accomplished players while remaining enjoyable for higher handicappers. The layout winds through mature pine and olive trees, with several holes featuring dramatic elevation changes that reward strategic play. The signature hole is the par-3 third — a downhill shot to a green perched above Palma Bay, with the cathedral visible in the distance. It is one of those holes that you photograph regardless of how well you played it.
The Condition is immaculate. Son Vida's greens are among the fastest and truest on the island, and the fairways are maintained to a standard that reflects the course's prestige. The clubhouse, housed in a building that complements the Son Vida estate's architectural character, offers excellent dining with terrace views that make lingering after your round a genuine pleasure.
Practical Information: Green fees range from €90 to €130 depending on season. Tee times should be booked at least one week in advance during peak periods. Club hire is available but we recommend bringing your own clubs for the best experience. The course is approximately fifteen minutes from central Palma and within easy reach of most Azul Stays villas in the southwest.
Son Muntaner: Modern Design Meets Mediterranean Drama
Son Muntaner, the newest addition to the Arabella Golf complex, has rapidly established itself as one of Mallorca's most respected courses. Designed by Kurt Rossknecht and opened in 2000, it offers a more modern, more challenging golfing experience than its neighbour Son Vida, with a layout that demands strategic thinking and rewards precision.
The Course is a par 72 measuring 6,401 metres from the back tees — significantly longer and more demanding than Son Vida. The design incorporates dramatic water features, strategically placed bunkers, and greens that require careful approach play. The course winds through a landscape of pine trees, olive groves, and rocky outcrops, with several holes offering sweeping views across the Mallorcan countryside to the sea.
The Signature Holes include the par-5 twelfth, which features a dramatic lake that must be navigated on the approach to the green, and the par-3 fifteenth, a stunning downhill shot to an island green surrounded by water. These holes combine visual drama with genuine strategic challenge, making them memorable regardless of the score.
The Practice Facilities at Son Muntaner are the best on the island — a comprehensive driving range, short game area, and putting green that make it an excellent venue for pre-round warm-ups or dedicated practice sessions. Professional coaching is available through the Arabella Golf Academy, which offers individual and group lessons with PGA-qualified instructors.
The Clubhouse is contemporary in design, with a restaurant and terrace that provide an excellent setting for post-round refreshment. The combination of Son Muntaner's challenging layout and superior facilities makes it the preferred course for serious golfers visiting Mallorca.
Club de Golf Alcanada: Mallorca's Masterpiece
Ask any serious golfer which is Mallorca's finest course, and the answer is almost invariably Alcanada. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 2003, this par-72 layout occupies a spectacular coastal site near Alcúdia in the island's northeast, with virtually every hole offering views of the sea and the iconic Alcanada lighthouse on its rocky island offshore.
The Course measures 6,486 metres from the championship tees and is consistently ranked among the top courses in continental Europe. The design takes full advantage of the coastal topography — several holes play along the shoreline, with the sea serving as both hazard and backdrop. The wind, which can vary significantly depending on direction and season, adds a strategic dimension that keeps the course interesting even for frequent visitors.
The Standout Holes are numerous, but the par-3 eighth deserves special mention — a tee shot across a rocky inlet to a green perched above the sea, with the lighthouse directly behind. In terms of pure visual drama, it ranks among the finest par-3s in European golf. The closing holes, which return along the coast with the mountains of the Tramuntana as a backdrop, provide a finish that is both challenging and breathtakingly beautiful.
The Environment is what ultimately distinguishes Alcanada. The course is set within a protected natural area, and the integration of the layout with the existing landscape — native vegetation, natural rock formations, mature trees — creates a sense of playing through a Mediterranean garden rather than a manufactured golf course. Wildlife is abundant, and the air carries the scent of pine and sea salt.
Practical Information: Green fees range from €100 to €160 depending on season. The course is approximately fifty minutes from Palma, making it a full-day excursion from southwest Mallorca but easily accessible from villas in the Pollença, Alcúdia, or Artà areas. The clubhouse restaurant serves excellent Mediterranean cuisine with panoramic sea views. Advance booking is essential, particularly for weekend tee times.
Beyond the Big Three: Hidden Gems and Alternatives
While Son Vida, Son Muntaner, and Alcanada represent Mallorca's golfing elite, the island offers numerous additional courses that deserve attention — particularly for guests planning multiple rounds during their stay.
Golf Santa Ponsa comprises three courses (I, II, and III) set in the hills above the resort town of Santa Ponsa. Course I, a par 72 designed by Folco Nardi, has hosted the Mallorca Open on the European Tour and offers a challenging, well-maintained layout with mountain views. Courses II and III are shorter and more forgiving, making them good options for less experienced players or for days when a more relaxed round is desired. Access policies vary; check with the club when planning.
Real Golf de Bendinat is an 18-hole course set in the exclusive Bendinat area between Palma and Portals Nous. The course winds through pine forests with glimpses of the sea, and its intimate scale and beautiful setting make it ideal for a leisurely morning round. The clubhouse terrace, overlooking the course with sea views beyond, is one of the most pleasant post-round settings on the island.
Pula Golf in Son Servera offers a well-designed eighteen-hole course in the island's northeast, with views across to the coast and the Artà mountains. The course is less crowded than the Palma corridor options and offers excellent value. The adjacent Pula Golf Resort provides dining and accommodation options.
Capdepera Golf, also in the northeast, is a hidden gem — a challenging par-72 course set in a dramatic landscape of rocky outcrops and mature vegetation, with views to the sea and the medieval castle of Capdepera. The course rewards accuracy over power and provides a different character from the more manicured Palma courses.
Son Antem in Llucmajor offers two courses (East and West) in a parkland setting south of Palma. Both provide good tests of golf in pleasant surroundings; check current access and course conditions directly with the resort.
The Golf Villa: Choosing the Perfect Base
The location of your villa relative to your preferred courses is an important consideration when planning a golf holiday in Mallorca.
For the Palma Corridor Courses (Son Vida, Son Muntaner, Son Quint, Bendinat, Santa Ponsa), villas in the Son Vida, Bendinat, Calvià, or Costa d'en Blanes areas provide the closest access — typically ten to twenty minutes to the first tee. These areas also offer proximity to Palma's restaurants, Puerto Portals' marina lifestyle, and the southwest coast's beaches, making them ideal for guests who want to combine golf with broader island exploration.
For Alcanada and the Northeast Courses (Alcanada, Capdepera, Pula, Canyamel), villas in the Pollença, Alcúdia, or Artà areas are optimal. These locations provide direct access to the island's finest course while also offering proximity to the beautiful northeast coastline, the Tramuntana mountains, and some of Mallorca's most charming towns.
For Maximum Variety, a villa in the central-southwest area provides reasonable access to both the Palma corridor and the northeast courses, allowing you to play a different course each day without excessive driving. The journey from Palma to Alcanada is approximately fifty minutes — manageable for a morning tee time with an early start.
Many Azul Stays villas have ample storage for clubs and equipment, and some feature practice putting greens or chipping areas; details can be confirmed for each villa. Our team can request tee times, arrange transport and organise club hire on request, subject to availability and confirmed for your booking.
The Best Season for Golf in Mallorca
Mallorca's climate allows for golf across much of the year, although conditions vary by season.
Spring (March to May) is often popular for golf in Mallorca. Temperatures can be comfortable for play, and winter rainfall may leave courses looking green. Almond blossom can be visible in parts of the island, while tee-time availability varies by course and date.
Autumn (September to November) is another popular period. September can remain warm, and October may bring cooler temperatures and autumn rainfall. November is generally cooler, with conditions varying from day to day. Green fees and availability depend on the individual course and booking date.
Summer (June to August) brings warmer weather, and midday play can feel uncomfortable. Early-morning or later-afternoon tee times may be preferable for some golfers. Course rates, daylight hours and tee-time availability vary by venue.
Winter (December to February) brings mild days as well as occasional rain. Courses may be quieter at certain times, but weather, green fees and availability vary by course and date.
For a golf holiday, consider the conditions you prefer, the courses you want to play and your preferred tee times when choosing your travel dates.
Practical Tips for Your Mallorca Golf Holiday
A few practical considerations will help ensure your golf holiday runs smoothly.
Club Hire vs. Bringing Your Own. Most courses offer quality hire sets (Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist), but serious golfers will prefer their own clubs. Most airlines accommodate golf bags as sports equipment, though policies and charges vary. Our concierge team can advise on the most golf-friendly airlines for your route and arrange secure club storage at your villa.
Booking Tee Times. For the premium courses (Alcanada, Son Vida, Son Muntaner), we recommend booking at least two weeks in advance during spring and autumn. Summer and winter are generally easier. Our concierge handles all bookings, ensuring preferred times and any special requirements (buggies, caddies, lessons) are arranged.
Dress Code. Mallorca's courses maintain traditional dress codes — collared shirts, tailored shorts or trousers, golf shoes. Denim, swimwear, and football shirts are not permitted. Most courses provide a dress code guide at booking.
Buggies and Caddies. Electric buggies are available at all courses (€30-50 per round). Walking is encouraged at Alcanada and Bendinat, where the terrain is manageable and the experience of walking through the landscape is part of the pleasure. Professional caddies can be arranged at the premium courses with advance notice.
Combining Golf with Other Activities. A well-planned golf holiday in Mallorca might include three or four rounds across different courses, interspersed with yacht charters, wine tastings, cultural excursions to Palma or the Tramuntana villages, and spa treatments. This variety prevents golf fatigue and ensures that non-golfing partners and family members are equally well entertained.
Group Golf Events. For corporate golf days, charity tournaments, or group celebrations, several courses offer event packages including reserved tee times, on-course catering, prizes, and post-round dining. Our concierge team has extensive experience organising golf events and can manage every detail.
