Discover the best family beaches in Mallorca with shallow water, sandy shores, and good facilities. Our local team's honest recommendations for children of all ages.
Finding the Perfect Family Beach in Mallorca
Mallorca has over 200 beaches, but not all are suitable for families with young children. The difference between a relaxing beach day and a stressful one often comes down to choosing the right cala — one with shallow entry, sandy bottom, calm water, shade options, and decent facilities nearby.
As a team with children of our own, we've tested virtually every beach on the island with families in mind. This guide shares our genuine recommendations — not the tourist-board version, but honest assessments including parking difficulty, crowd levels, and the specific ages each beach suits best.
We've organised beaches by region so you can find options near your villa, and included practical details that guidebooks often miss: where to park, whether you need water shoes, and which beaches have the calmest water on windy days.
North Coast: The Family Beach Capital
Playa de Alcúdia — The gold standard for family beaches. A 7km stretch of fine sand with incredibly shallow water (you can walk 50 metres out and still be knee-deep). Sunbed rental, restaurants, toilets, and lifeguards. Can be busy in August but the sheer size means you'll always find space. Best for: all ages, especially babies and toddlers. Parking: large paid car parks.
Playa de Muro — The quieter continuation of Alcúdia beach, backed by pine forest and the S'Albufera nature reserve. Same shallow, sandy conditions but fewer crowds. The pine trees provide natural shade. Several chiringuitos for drinks and snacks. Best for: families wanting space and natural shade. Parking: roadside and small lots.
Port de Pollensa Beach — A town beach with all amenities within walking distance. Shallow, calm water protected by the bay. Ice cream shops, restaurants, and playgrounds nearby. The promenade is perfect for evening strolls with pushchairs. Best for: families who want everything walkable. Parking: town car parks (busy in summer).
Formentor Beach — Stunning pine-backed beach with turquoise water. More exposed than Alcúdia (can have waves) but exceptionally beautiful. Limited facilities. The drive is dramatic but winding. Best for: older children (5+) and families who prioritise beauty over convenience. Parking: limited, arrive before 10 AM in summer.
East Coast: Turquoise Coves
Cala Mondragó — A natural park beach with two connected coves. Crystal-clear turquoise water, sandy bottom, and gentle entry. Snack bar and toilets available. The surrounding nature trails are great for older children. Can be busy but never feels overwhelming due to the natural setting. Best for: ages 3+. Parking: paid car park (€6), 10-minute walk to beach.
Cala Marçal (Porto Colom) — A wide, sandy beach with very shallow water and a gentle slope. Good facilities including restaurants, sunbeds, and toilets. The town of Porto Colom is charming for post-beach ice cream. Less touristy than the north coast. Best for: all ages. Parking: free roadside parking usually available.
Cala Santanyí — A beautiful cove with fine sand and clear water. Sheltered from wind by cliffs on both sides. Small but well-equipped with a beach bar. The natural rock arch (Es Pontàs) is visible from the beach — older children love swimming to it (with supervision). Best for: ages 4+. Parking: paid lot, short walk.
Cala Millor — A long, wide sandy beach with all facilities. Very shallow entry, lifeguards, and a pedestrianised promenade behind. Multiple restaurants and shops within walking distance. More developed/resort-like than other options but extremely practical for families. Best for: all ages, especially those wanting maximum convenience.
Southwest Coast: Sheltered Gems
Camp de Mar — Our top recommendation for families staying in the Puerto Andratx area. A sheltered sandy beach with remarkably shallow, calm water. A small island (accessible by wooden walkway) has a restaurant — children love the adventure of 'going to the island for lunch.' Sunbeds, toilets, and a beach bar available. Best for: all ages, particularly toddlers. Parking: paid car park adjacent.
Santa Ponça — A large, well-equipped beach with fine sand and gentle entry. Excellent facilities including playgrounds, restaurants, and water sports rental. The bay is sheltered, keeping water calm even on windy days. More developed than some options but very practical. Best for: all ages. Parking: multiple car parks.
Paguera (Palmira Beach) — Three connected beaches with a pedestrianised promenade. Sandy, shallow, and well-maintained with full facilities. The promenade has numerous family restaurants and ice cream shops. Protected from waves by the bay's orientation. Best for: all ages, especially families wanting walkable amenities. Parking: underground car parks.
Hidden Gems & Insider Tips
Es Trenc — Mallorca's most famous 'natural' beach. Long stretch of white sand with Caribbean-coloured water. Less suitable for very young children (limited shade, fewer facilities, can have currents) but spectacular for older families. Arrive early in summer. Best for: ages 6+.
Cala Tuent — A remote, unspoiled beach on the northwest coast reached by a dramatic mountain road. Pebble and sand mix with clear water. The restaurant (Es Vergeret) serves excellent paella. An adventure for older children who enjoy the drive and the wild setting. Best for: ages 8+.
Practical Tips for All Beaches:
- Arrive before 10 AM in July-August for parking and space
- Water shoes are useful for rocky entry points (not needed at sandy beaches listed above)
- Most beaches have no shade — bring or rent parasols
- Lifeguards operate June-September at major beaches
- The north coast has calmer water than the south/east in summer (prevailing wind direction)
- Our concierge can arrange beach equipment delivery (parasols, cool boxes, toys) to any beach
- For private beach experiences, consider a boat trip to otherwise inaccessible calas
Beach Day Essentials from Your Villa
What We Provide — All family villas include beach bags, towels, basic beach toys, and cool boxes. We can pre-stock your villa with additional items on request.
What to Bring — High-factor sun cream (SPF 50 for children), rash vests for extended water play, snorkelling equipment for older children (or we can provide), and a waterproof phone case for photos.
Beach Club Alternative — For a more luxurious beach day, consider Mallorca's beach clubs: Nikki Beach (Calvià), Gran Folies (Cala Llamp), and Purobeach (Palma). These offer sunbeds, waiter service, pools, and children's areas — a middle ground between a public beach and staying at the villa.
Boat Trip Option — For a truly special family day, our concierge can arrange a private boat charter (half-day from €800) that visits secluded calas inaccessible by land. Children love the adventure of anchoring in a private cove, swimming from the boat, and snorkelling in crystal-clear water. This is one of our most popular family recommendations.
